Description

Cordyline Australis, commonly known as the Cabbage Tree or Torbay Palm, is an evergreen tree-like plant native to New Zealand. It is a member of the Asparagaceae family and is highly valued for its architectural form, colourful foliage, and its ability to add a tropical touch to gardens and landscapes.

It has a single, stout trunk that is topped with a cluster of long, sword-shaped leaves. The leaves are typically dark green, but certain cultivars may exhibit variations in colour, ranging from reds and purples to cream and variegated patterns.

In mature plants, Cordyline australis produces dense clusters of small, fragrant flowers on tall, branching stalks. The flowers are typically creamy white or pale yellow and are followed by small berries that attract birds to the garden.

This plant is known for it’s hardiness and adaptability, thriving in a wide range of conditions. It prefers full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil, but it can tolerate a variety of soil types, including sandy or clay soils. Cordyline australis is also tolerant of coastal conditions and is capable of withstanding strong winds.

The Cabbage Tree is popular in landscaping for its tropical appearance and its ability to provide a focal point in gardens. It can be used as a standalone specimen plant or in groupings to create a dramatic effect. Additionally, it is often utilised as a container plant or as a striking addition to tropical or Mediterranean-themed gardens.
